Hi Everyone
In developing an HDU the staff would like to have a pan sanitiser installed. Has anyone else had experience with this?
Are there any development guidelines that refer to the requirements around pan sanitisers?
Are they supposed to be located in a separate room, for example? Do they produce aerosols so require a separate room?
The AusHFG do not seem to provide that kind of detail so your assistance would be welcome.

Hi Lincoln,
Pan sanitisers are typically located in a dirty utility room –
https://www.healthfacilityguidelines.com.au/standard-components go to this
link and search for dirty utility and it will give you room layouts. Dirty
utility rooms should be at a negative pressure to the surrounding
environment and achieve 10 air changes per hour. The pan sanitiser should be specified to meet ISO15883.3.
I hope that helps.
Kind Regards

Hi Lincoln
We developed a template to review our machines (pan and utensil washers) which helped us
Feel free to use if you would like and add elements you find important. We looked at everything from ANZ4187 compliance with Validation testing / use of detergents/ how many items could be washed / consideration of cycle time and water usage (impact on environment)
Our SSD Manager helped with the review which helped us understand what was needed from a Standards point of view
Our Microbiologist reviewed the testing reports for the machines before final approval givenWhen designing our dirty utility rooms we looked at
1. Dirty and clean flows
2. Position of extraction fans in pan room to be above flush sink and near pan sanitiser to remove steam created by cycle
3. Ensuring no cupboards or racks above flush sink
4. Ensuring that there were no gaps under shelving (coved flooring)
Our sanitisers are within the dirty utility room
From my experience the flush sink would be more of a risk of aerosols. Happy to be corrected. Staff should be careful when loading bottles to protect from splash etc.It is only Within our new SSD we have complete physical separation of areas but this principle did not apply in pan rooms. However we made sure we had Dirty and clean flows
Good luck
You can contact us at SGH if you would like some additional guidance
Thanks

Thank you everyone for your consideration and responses.
I’ll ask another question: Do the standards/codes state, imply, require that a “Flusher Disinfector” must not be in a patient area such as a high dependency unit and should only be in a dirty utility room?
I’m mindful that aerosols could be a potential problem although the risks around using open disposal areas with splashing is probably much higher.
I’d be interested to know of anyone who has direct experience of this type of installation.
