Dear all,
We are currently looking at our service provision and model of care and specifically what other Infection control departments provide in the way of management of occupational exposures. Our department covers two campuses and as well as running the infection control programme we are responsible for the management of occupational exposures despite there being a staff health service for the LHD, they do not provide a occupational exposure service to our facility but they do to other facilities in the LHD.
What do people feel should be the basic level of knowledge for staff to provide a service? and do you feel we should have priorty access to other support services?
any information would be greatly appreciated and anyone that wants to share there programme that would be great.
Thankyou

Hi Sue,
Infection Control at Bendigo Health manages all occupational exposures in business hours. We provide counselling and the gaining of consent for BBV testing of recipient and source and organise follow up testing. After hour and weekend exposures are referred to E.D. by the After Hours Manager and we are notified by phone message the next morning. We then contact staff member to ensure counselling and appropriate testing was done.
Cheers,
Amanda Ayres.

Subject: [ACIPC_Infexion_Connexion] Occupational ExposuresHi all,
I am hoping that you might be able to assist me. We are currently revising the model in which my health service currently manages occupaitonal exposures. The current model involves the recipient of an exposure visiting the emergency department for assessment. Infection prevention and control (IPAC) will then complete all followup. The model we are considering is a ‘nurse led’ occupational exposure management program based within IPAC.
I am wondering what models other health facilities currently work (success of same) with to manage occupational exposures and if you would be willing to share that information.Thank you in advance.

16/11/2015 at 5:32 pm #72601Good Morning All,
The Infection Prevention and Management team includes staff health at Fiona Stanley and as such provides a nurse lead service for occupational exposures. In hours an occupational exposure is managed by the staff health nurse and if required consultation with Infectious Diseases (IDD) Consultants . After hours occupational exposures are managed by the Hospital Out of Hours Team (HOOT) nurse unit manager and medical officers. If it is deemed a high risk exposure, the on call IDD consultant is contacted for further advice and management.
Most of the IP&M team have under gone the 2 day pre and post-test counselling course run through the WA Aids council. In-services are then carried out for the HOOT team to effectively manage exposures out of hours.
The staff health nurses have a close working relationship with Infectious Diseases and as such are able to discuss any concerns or high risk exposures with the team.
Kind Regards

Subject: Re: Occupational ExposuresHi Sue,
Infection Control at Bendigo Health manages all occupational exposures in business hours.
