Hi,
Just a quick query regarding the use of non-sterile kidney dishes. Does anyone use them as single use, or continue to use them multiple times if cleaned with neutral detergent?
Mainly used for carrying sharps, pre & post injections, administration, etc.Regards

Dear Che,
We reuse kidney dishes (or a form of them, it’s more a container in segments) and clean between patients with neutral detergent wipes. If heavily contaminated or an infection risk they can be sent down to CSSD for a sterile clean.

Dear Che,
Thank you for raising this topic as I have issues with this as well.
The Oncology and infectious diseases wards will throw them out after single use.
The ICU will put them in the utensil washer and run a cycle with them in and reuse them if the patient they used them on was not infectious. If the patient is infectious then they dispose of them after single use.
The other wards will clean them with a neutral detergent and reuse them.This has been an historical practice. When I have looked at changing the practice, I have been told that the nursing staff are too busy to clean them out as they use so many of them so it is easier to throw them out.
I would be interested to hear other people’s experience and practices.

Paper pulp products are not puncture proof for carrying sharps – are you using these types for trays just for needleless injections .
How do you manage your injections that still have sharps e.g. insulin / clexane?
We are also investigating this issue as single use injection trays can become costly & staff are reluctant to throw them out to save money & the environment.Cath Wade

Hi Cath,
The type we use are very robust, we have tested them, and very difficult to pierce. They do not ever carry an unguarded sharp. Sharps go straight into sharps bin- at the bed side. Insulin is drawn up at the patient’s bedside, and Clexane comes in its own syringe.
It has actually saved us money with water/ washing costs, and nurse time and they are recycled in our recycling program.Hope that helps

How do you manage your injections that still have sharps e.g. insulin / clexane?

Thank you for raising this topic as I have issues with this as well.
The Oncology and infectious diseases wards will throw them out after single use.
The ICU will put them in the utensil washer and run a cycle with them in and reuse them if the patient they used them on was not infectious. If the patient is infectious then they dispose of them after single use.
The other wards will clean them with a neutral detergent and reuse them.This has been an historical practice. When I have looked at changing the practice, I have been told that the nursing staff are too busy to clean them out as they use so many of them so it is easier to throw them out.
I would be interested to hear other people’s experience and practices.
