    Hi all
I have two questions specifically for facilities with a NICU but all feedback will be appreciated.

    1. Has any NICU undertaken an evaluation and implemented a waterless surgical scrub in their unit?

    2. Looking at other NICU policies / protocols for skin antisepsis prior to IM injections, taking into consideration mothers with known BBV?

    Kind Regards

    Hi Robert,
We use Skinman 90 in all our Operating Suites, Medical Imaging and Cardiac Labs and Dialysis Units. I see no reason why you shouldnt use it in you NICU.

    Hi Robert, hi Richard,

Waterless surgical scrub (better term: alcohol-based surgical hand antiseptic) would be indicated for operations. There are now a number of alcohol-based hand rubs that fulfill a dual purpose of being both a surgical hand antiseptic and a ward-based alcohol-based hand rub for use between patients. The difference is that for surgical hand antisepsis, alcohol-based hand antiseptics need to fulfill more stringent requirements (e.g. in Europe standard EN 12791), while ward-based hand antiseptics need to fulfill slightly less stringent requirements (e.g. EN1500). A number of products fulfill both and can be used interchangeably (but the application mode, technique and duration are different).

In terms of skin antisepsis (different from hand antisepsis), almost anything is compatible with use on mature neonates, but premature neonates are a problem. This poses a continuing dilemma. Europe has octenidine for that purpose, which has quite reasonable microbial killing capacity, and is very compatible with premmie skin.

    Regards, Matthias.
