Hi Everyone,
Hope you’re all well.
Just wondering if anyone has a successful Infection Control Liaison Personnel Program, and if you can please share your secrets.
I am trying to start a new project at CCLHD to empower Infection Control personnel in clinical areas.
I need to know what is working for you?
Do you have meetings on a regular basis?
Do you get enough staff attending?
How do you run your program?
Are they mostly nurses or do you have medical and admin staff involved?
Do you have a policy or guidelines?Thank you in advanced.
Kind regardsMaham Amin

Hi Maham
I am the manager in a smaller SJOG site and up until recently was the only person here with any qualifications for IPC. While I have not developed a formal program of education we have identified staff from each area who have an interest in IPC and they form part of the committee. The committee has one of the highest attendance rates in the hospital which think is testament to the support I get from executive. So some of the things I have found that have worked in developing these people at ward/department level are:Executive support time away from ward to attend meetings. Executive also need to understand the importance of the IPC standard
Daily round if possible to touch base with them if they are at work
Encouraging them to be active in audits in their ward area they will learn to spot the risks and respond appropriately and I then find this then transfers into learned behaviour amongst other staff
I also believe you need to walk the talk everyday with these staff as you need them to be your eyes and ears on the street.
Good luck!

12/12/2019 at 3:40 pm #76100Hello Maham,
You are in luck, our organisation has a liaison team that is turning 25 years next year!
While it has evolved and expanded a lot since my manager formed the team back in 1995, the team has and remains an important part of managing infection and risk at our health service.
I’ve been coordinating the team for the last 5 years so have some knowledge I can share.
Our current numbers are: over 75 staff representing 35 different departments/areas within our organisation. We have semi-regular meetings (every 2 months) and run a study day for them each year. Communication is also via email or an online forum on our intranet. I used to send out newsletters but as my time has been eaten up with other responsibilities within the organisation, those have gone by the wayside. I’m a little bit graphic-design and tech savvy so this helps!
Most are nurses but we have a few allied health staff. We are open to medical or admin joining the team however they should have a bit of a clinical background of knowledge to draw from to help in their understanding of the role.
I have all kinds of resources I can share, such as position descriptions, welcome packs, presentations, etc. if needed. Please feel free to email me on my work email (listed below) if you wish for more info.
Warm Regards,
Monica.

16/12/2019 at 11:06 am #76106Hi Maham,
We have a very successful Infection Control Link Nurse Program that started in SA in early 2000.
* We currently have 46 ICLNs across sites that have dedicated time either a day a month, fortnight, week or several days per week
* We also have IC ward reps (some are previous ICLN)
* Each position has a J&P regarding their roles
* We also have a program that is reviewed every year including audits that are collected by the ICLN as part of our accreditation evidence
* They are also involved in education and quality improvement programs at both local and hospital wide level
* The meet monthly and teleconference/videoconference in
* We also run 2 workshops a year and a hand hygiene program in line with the NHHI
Sharing and supporting each other is important rather than just reinventing the wheel!
Happy to share with any one if you email me directly and please acknowledge where the information has come from.
Kind Regards
