    Good afternoon,

It is my understanding that it is not allowed to hand wash items in aged care facilities. I’m however unable to find the evidence for this, would any of you be able to help me with the standards or guidelines around this?

I did have a look at the laundry standard, but it doesn’t deal specifically with this

    Thank you in advance
    Marlize

    Hi Marlize

Guess the first question to ask is by what means have you been given the understanding that it is not allowed to hand wash items in aged care facilities? Were you informed by anyone with any level of authority or is it just a folklore type thing that has been passed around?

You are right, there is nothing in the laundry standards that addresses this. And there is nothing in the aged care standards that precludes hand washing either. The infection control outcome states that laundry is carried out with provision of infection control standards.

I think you may find that the reason that aged care facilities do not do handwashing comes down purely to resources, costs and practicality. Some facilities will accommodate this, and on the flip side, many residents will send their delicate laundry home to family. As an assessor for aged care, it is not an issue that I have ever had a problem with.

    Thanks Belinda,

I think this should be handled from a cross-contamination and possible transfer of infections point of view. The guidelines is not clear on the hand washing part, making it difficult to argue the point. I will look for articles on this.
