Good morning all
Just after some advice on lanyards – yes or no?
We have not used them here in years, but our relatively new exec team want to reintroduce them.
They have said they will be of a silicone material and can be wiped down regularly (not sure how that will go!!!)
Does anyone have any recent articles/research regarding this that I could use?
Thanks

Hi Jenny
There isn’t a huge amount of literature to be found regarding Lanyards but here is one from the Australian Medical Journal from 2008 (super old!). It suggests that lanyards carry a higher risk than name badges.
The main reason why most sites eliminated lanyards was because of the fact there was no way to monitor if they were ever cleaned. It was also a safety risk due to patients grabbing onto the lanyards and I have seen a few skin tears from them as well.
I would do a risk assessment and present to executive. You will be relying on staff to clean their own lanyards, how is this monitored? Why is there need for a change? What are you currently using and why isn’t this working?Sorry I don’t have a clear answer but as an RN working with patients, I would never wear a lanyard again regardless of the material its made of.
Kind Regards
