QLDHi All,
I was wondering if anyone is collecting data on the use of I/O devices in their health service? I am particularly interested in insertion, utilisation and complication data (so really anything!). There is a lot of literature out there supporting increased use of the I/O route for vascular access and a number of papers have suggested that the lower rates of complications is a reason to increase use of this route, although most studies are very small and not really able to make definitive statements. From an infection prevention side of things I have struggled to find evidence to support many of the practices surrounding IO routes so would be interested in knowing what health services were recommending and why. If you want to know a little more this article is a good place to start: Phillips et al., (2010). Recommendations for the use of intraosseous vascular access for emergent and non emergent situations in various healthcare settings: a consensus paper, Critical Care Nurse, 30(6).
