Hi
Does anyone have any information how they collate infections in Aged Care. At present if a resident has a chest infection the medical officer just orders antibiotics for the resident. There is no sputum sent for laboratory investigation.Ann Reddy

12/08/2013 at 10:31 am #70328Hi Ann
Most aged care facilities record incidents of infection and do trend analysis on their stats, probably monthly. Dependent on the organisation, they may record what antibiotic is ordered and the depth of their recordings would vary from facility to facility. As the home is dealing with individual medical practitioners coming in, there tends to be inconsistency as to whether specimens are sent off to pathology. This also depends on the infection; in my experience, many chest infections are prescribed antibiotics as you say, similarly UTIs are often treated without pathology results, however wound swabs can be sent off.
There are standards that must be met in regards to infection control, which relate to the homes having an effective system. It does not prescribe how that is achieved, but gives guidelines.
