Dear Colleagues
Forwarding this request from us feedback on behalf of our Microbiology department here at Nepean who are looking at our processes here compared to what others of you may be doing re haem/onc wards and infection control
We really appreciate any help / responses from those happy to help out as per the questions our registrar Shrada has listed below
Thank you in advance
Lindy
Ps if you wish to forward your response off line please send them to our lovely registrar Shrada Subedi
Shrada.Subedi@health.nsw.gov.auDear all,
We are doing an audit on respiratory viruses on our haem/onc ward at Nepean Hospital, since we are in the process of reviewing our infection control practices on those wards. We are interested in finding out what other units are doing in terms of isolation of patients with respiratory viruses. We may use results of this survey (of course hospital names will be kept completely anonymous) to compare with our own current local practice, so please only reply if you are happy for this to occur.
-Do you have oncology and haematology inpatients on the same ward (s)?
-Does your haematology unit perform BMT (Allo+ auto/ auto only)?
-Do you automatically isolate all patients admitted with any infective symptom during winter or is isolation limited to patients with respiratory symptoms until diagnosis confirmed/ excluded?
-Isolation type until results confirmed- 1) Droplet + contact 2) Droplet only 3) Contact only -For respiratory viruses other than influenza, once confirmed, do you change your isolation practice to contact only or continue with droplet and contact?
-Do you have a sign in book for visitors to ensure visitors with symptoms of respiratory tract infection are discouraged from visiting patients on the ward?
-Do you discourage visitors (eg. Have a sign outside the ward) under the age of 12 (unless an immediate family member) from visiting during peak respiratory virus season?
-Is isolation ceased- a) when symptoms are gone b) when a repeat test for the respiratory virus is negative c) after a set number of days for each respiratory virus?Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.
Kind regards
Shradha Subedi
