Hello All,
Does anyone have any policy surrounding Ice Machine use in hospitals? Does anyone use scoop ice machines? If so, do you have a policy surrounding their use and cleaning? Any information would be useful.
Thanks,

Dear Kristin,
So long as they are well maintained the associated risks can be managed.
Ice-machines are installed in each ward area within our campus. These machines are on an ongoing annual maintenance schedule and includes sanitation.
Public Health Units undertake their own quarterly water sampling from across the campus and provide the results back to IPAC and engineering department. This provides qualitative water testing results to supplement the monthly testing that is undertaken by engineering.Regards,

Hi Joanne,
Due to the risk of contamination of ice machines with Legionella we use a 0.2 micron filtered outlet in the kitchen and fill ice bags to produce ice for human consumption. The bags have a sticker placed on the outside with use by date & we give the ice a shelf life of 2 weeks. The wards order sheets of ice for their pantry freezers, just as they do other pantry items. I am not aware of any complaints from staff or patients about the process and we have been using this system for a few years now.Regards

Hi Joanne,
During the redevelopment of Forbes Hospital in 2015 we looked at this issue. In the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare, Part C, page 237 it statesIce machines
Ice storage receptacles and ice-making machines should be properly maintained and regularly
cleaned. Ice and ice-making machines may be contaminated through improper handling of ice
by patients and/or staff. Ice for human consumption should be differentiated from ice for first aid
or storage of clinical specimens. Pharmaceuticals or medical solutions should not be stored on ice
intended for consumption.
Machines that dispense ice are preferable to those that require ice to be removed from bins or
chests with a scoop. Ice machines and their dispensers should be flushed and cleaned if they
have not been disconnected before anticipated lengthy water disruptionsWe purchased the ice machines that dispense the ice directly into a cup and placed one each in the Birthing Suites, Recovery ward & Inpatient Unit. Maintenance has them on their preventative maintenance calendar for 6 monthly checks.
So far we have had no issues with them.

I remember there was some discussion on the efficacy of ice machines in healthcare at conference last year.
Does anyone have any fores or against?
Cheers
