    Good afternoon,

Can I ask for an opinion on the below email I received form our Sleep studies manager?

Q: Can you add any further to the request as to how often we should change the bag of water we use through our ward humidifiers. We currently use a 2 litre water for irrigation which comes sterile like an IV bag and there is no need to access the line once set up and it is only use for humidification not to administer any medication. It is a closed system.

Manufacturer has offered this advice: For hospital inpatient use our humidifiers require consumable change-out every 7 days. With regards to our RT380 Adult Vent Circuit, this has now been extended to 14 days due to improved heaterwire technology in the inspiratory limb.

With regards water bag change-out, this is dictated by hospital Pharmacies as they provide the sterile water bags used with the humidifiers and generally recommend a ‘hang-time’ before these require changing – this can vary from hospital to hospital from 24hrs, 48hrs or in some instances I believe some are using water bags until empty before replacing. I suggest you contact your pharmacy for their recommendations.

    Any thoughts?
