For those that have not yet seen it, the latest edition of MJA has an
article looking at the impact on hospital funding if Victorian hospitals
were subject to not being reimbursed for ‘hospital-acquired conditions’
such as is currently in place in the US.http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/193_01_050710/mcn11241_fm.html
Some of the discussion centres around how facilities would possibly
change their disease coding to try and minimise financial impact of such
a policy, and how funding bodies could try to minimise the impact of
such a strategy. This is an interesting topic to keep abreast of, as it could be an
avenue for requesting further infection control and prevention resources
to help minimise such infection related conditions. Vascular
catheter-associated infection certainly is the highest component of the
estimates (not surprising), and there is good evidence to say the
majority of these are preventable.Cheers
