    Hi,

Has anyone seen any evidence based data surrounding the administration of blood products and the timing of the COVID vaccine administration? Apparently the vaccine pre-administration checklist asks if the patients have had immunoglobulins within the last 48 hrs and other blood products within 24 hrs. If they have it is not advised for them to have the vaccine on this day.

We have a patient booked for a 9am COVID vaccination and then RBC transfusion at 2:30pm on the same day. I cant find any information around whether we need to wait for 24-48 hrs post until blood products are transfused.

Our haematologists and pharmacists were not aware of any issues with timing surrounding the vaccine and blood products as it is not a live vaccine. Our public health unit has said that the checklist question is based on the potential that antibodies in the blood products (if given pre-vaccine) could interfere with the immune response to the COVID vaccine.

Im not sure if there have been any studies done, but we certainly cant find anything. The advice from our public health team was that if the blood is not critical try and wait 24 hrs post, but that they had no data on whether this was necessary. I think it may just be untested.
