Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has a policy/procedure/guidelines for washing machines in their facilities?
We have a few domestic machines in our mental health wards for patient use. It has been brought to our attention that there are concerns of cross infections as these are domestic machines and the requirements for cleaning of machines in between patient uses.
Is there any guidelines on this? Any standard that dictate that we need to use commercial machines instead with a specific heat setting to avoid cross infections?
And cleaning in between patients? This will include the dryers.
We have been asked to produce a guideline for our wards to address this and any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Best regards,

We have 3 Mental health units, all with domestic machines, washers and dryers. We provide the chemicals for clothes washing and it is in a metered dose from an automatic dispenser, which patients cannot access. The water temperature is also set.

Hi Derrick
Notwithstanding the relevant Australian Standards applicable to laundry, in
mental health you face similar challenges to those of us working in the Aged
Care sector. In AC its all about choice, that includes having provision for
residents to be able to complete their laundry where they have the capacity
– we simply can’t say “you have no choice, you have to use our service” –
same issue comes to the fore when families decide they are going to do their
relatives laundry – how on earth would we control how ‘clean’ their machine
is, or what they do between loads. There are products on the market that facilitate the cleaning of washing,
but I am not aware of any Australian standard or documented process that
would address trying to ‘normalise’ things for those who can do them during
a pandemic – the pandemic is something we hope will be a once in a lifetime
experience. With residents I am lucky enough to care for there have been no issues to
date – but I would hate to think the solution is an institutional one,
thereby taking away more independence, which I believe would equally apply
in a mental health setting. At the end of the day the approach I take is a risk based one and go from
there. At this point in time, no COVID in the locale – in fact nothing for
the last 5 months, so likelihood is way down on the scale – RESULT – Risk
managed, happy residents.Hope this helps

29/10/2020 at 1:13 pm #77474Hi Derrick,
I agree with David, Helen and Leanne. It really does come down to the
individual situation.
Commercial machines will essentially provide you with the ability to meet
thermal disinfection (65 degrees C for 10 minutes or 71 degrees C for 3
minutes) to AS NZS 4146-2000.
Domestic machines (generally) do not have the ability to program. You can also look at chemical disinfection via powder or as Helen mentioned
via a dispensing system with a measured dose to meet Australian Standards
Happy to assist further if needed.–
Stay Safe,

NSWHi Derrick
There have been a number of useful responses already to this great question, but just wanted tio mention there are a number of disinfection chemicals that can be used at both high and low temperature wash cycles that you could look at.
As mentioned, the washing of personal clothing by a resident is a ‘grey area’, but good practice would dictate that disinfection of the washing machine between residents would be of value in reducing any cross-infection risks. This may or may not include use of chemicals which disinfect the machine at the same time as clothes are washed. We can’t mention actual product names or companies in Infexion Connexion (sorry, I let one slip through today, my apologies), but speak to your chemical suppliers, or speak to other similar facilities to see how they manage this as well.
Hope you can find a working process that fits your circumstances, as well as managing infection risk.
Cheers

29/10/2020 at 3:55 pm #77477Thank you so much to everyone who responded. Our infection control team has informed me that we do have guidelines set in our service already. And they will assist us in our query for mental health. My mistake for not checking in with them first. Thank you again.

30/10/2020 at 10:52 am #77482Unfortunately, in my experience, many acute hospital wards want a washing
machine to wash some patients nightgowns and other personal clothing items
when their family are unable to provide help. They do not always consult
IP&C.service. They often have little spare housekeeping staff so these
washing machines are risky. It is important to be sure there is dedicated
staff to perform the service.
In the Spinal Injury Unit, I visited regularly, patients might be in
different stages of rehabilitation and therefore want personal clothing. We
instituted one patient one load of washing. Contaminated clothes or if
patients were colonised with resistant bacteria we soaked the inner body
clothes in a bleach solution formulated for clothing. The washing machine
had to be wiped down between patients and receive disinfection run daily.
