Dear All,
This study will be of interest to healthcare facilities using reusable
transvaginal and transrectal ultrasound probes. The poster was presented at SHEA Spring 2015: Science Guiding Prevention
Conference, May 14-17 2015, Orlando, Florida. The study looked at the effectiveness of two disinfectants commonly used for
high level disinfection, glutaraldehyde and ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and
an automated high level disinfection system (see poster for product details)
against human papillomavirus. The findings were as follows:
* “An automated high level disinfection system was able to fully
inactivate HPV16 and HPV18 under normal clinical use conditions
(concentration, time, temperature).* Hypochlorite was more effective than OPA at reducing infectivity
of HPV16 and HPV18, although complete inactivation was not achieved.* OPA is currently accepted as a HLD; hypochlorite is unsuitable for
plastics used to manufacture endocavity ultrasound probes.* The findings suggest that a review of probe reprocessing methods
and disinfection standards as related to HLD may be warranted”.Regards
Glenys
