    Dear colleagues,

Just curious if any of you can advise from an IPAC perspective on the following discussion regarding already set-up ventilator circuits and how long can be it be set-up prior to use?

    Kind regards,

We do not leave the vent set up here, but set it up as needed.
It is wiped over and a bacterial filter applied to protect the machine prior to storing.
When we need it, the filter is thrown away and circuit set up and tested ready for use.

(please read this as Kaye the clinician, not Kaye from ICCMU)
My question is what is the benefit to risk ratio on having circuits ready to go?

In the old days we had to make up our circuits from scratch (anyone remember winding paper into a F & P heater)
The benefit then was it took some time to get a circuit ready and you might not have clinicians available to set the circuit up and do the leak tests etc etc

The key risk is how do you know that the circuit is sterile and intact when you didnt set it up?

    cheers

    Hello Wendy
I dont think you will find any official number on this. However my feeling would be 3 months. This if anything allows staff to have the experience to change the cct ( and doesnt break the bank re costs) . Obviously you would need to keep the patient Y covered by something , the going option seems to be a glove . I would more frequently check the vent , possibly weekly doing self test and checking that there is no cct leaks so ready to use !

    Cheers

    Hi Everyone
Being both Rural AND Remote we do not get many ventilated patients and those we do get are shipped out reasonably quickly. This means the ventilators may stay set up for a considerable time between patients. Does anyone have a time frame for changing unused circuits?
