    Good afternoon,
If anyone has developed a hospital wide equipment cleaning schedule that works really well (wheel chairs, pumps, IV poles etc) are you happy to share how you made it work?

    Kind regards,
    Pam

    Hi Pamela , Helen ,

The range of applications with respect to a single cleaning schedule is not possible without consequences for medical equipment , the NIKI T34 pumps were part of a recall for that very reason and the same issue applies to all makes and models.

    https://www.gov.uk/drug-device-alerts/all-models-of-t34-ambulatory-syringe-pumps-updated-cleaning-advice-and-maintenance-requirements-due-to-the-risk-of-fluid-ingress-mda-2019-030

A common theme, which is not new, relates to the various plastics and types of metal used to manufacture casings and parts, including the internal parts :

    https://www.gov.uk/drug-device-alerts/medical-device-alert-detergent-and-disinfectant-wipes-used-on-reusable-medical-devices-with-plastic-surfaces-risk-of-degrading-plastic-surfaces.

With the increase in necessary but often over-enthusiastic cleaning due to COVID-19 we probably going to see a spike in issues related to fluid ingress and in most of these will manifest themselves in weeks, months, and possibly longer as this is a slow process. Keep in mind equipment such as ventilators have functional lives of 7 plus years.

The manufacturers’ instructions are the gold standard and medical equipment is included in AS/NZS 4187 as they do fall into the definition of reusable devices. It’s also important to make sure updates to cleaning instructions are available to all staff and hence the equipment use documentation needs to be revised on a regular basis.

One option is to make sure everyone has access to the manufacturers’ instructions, if you contact me offline I can let you know how this is and can be done, ps NT Health have a state-wide system in place.

    Regards
    George
