    Dear Members and ACIPC President

    Thanks to the existing ACIPC Board for advising members yesterday of the process for nominating to stand in the future Board. The current ACIPC Constitution is economic on detail regarding the policies and procedures that apply to Board Members. I wonder if any of you, like me, are interested in knowing more about what is expected of and what caveats exist around ACIPC Board Members. This information can in some cases potentially entice or preclude potential Board Members from applying to be on the Board.

    I am particularly interested in hearing from current ACIPC Board of Directors (BOD) regarding the following:

    * An estimate of hours per week that are needed to contribute to the Board – frequency and location of face-to-face meetings;
    * Any remunerations, reimbursements, stipends or privileges extended routinely to BOD or BOD leadership ie. conference registration etc;
    * Any caveats or policies that apply to matters such as conflict of interest, ineligibility to apply for awards, scholarships, grants or the like whilst holding office as well as codes of conduct and expectations of Directors in terms of confidentiality;
    * Selection and Appointment of the President-elect;
    * General skills and attributes required to be a highly functioning Board member;
    * Liability of Directors and protection afforded by ACIPC ie. insurance and protection from personal litigation whilst serving as a Director.
    * Limit of successive terms that Directors can serve (for the purposes of refreshing and renewing an organisation)

    These and others were all important issues that were made available to candidates during my 7-year term as Director and subsequently Pres-elect, President and Immediate Past President of APIC in the US. In my mind they are really important for candidates to know before nominating and I would like to know if ACIPC has, or is in the process of developing these policies for the ACIPC Board. Some of these matters were covered in the then AICA Rules/ Constitution that applied during my years as AICA BOD and subsequently as AICA President in 1996-7. They help candidates know beforehand what the conditions they will operate under are.

    As an aside and pending ACIPC’s response to the these questions I would personally encourage any member contemplating contributing to ACIPC as a BOD to pursue that action. BOD service is an excellent way to contribute to and learn about professional organisations and the community of members and stakeholder they serve. It is also a great way to understand human behaviours and build your own leadership skills. Good luck to all who apply.

    Yours sincerely

    Cath
