    Further to this previous email, Claire Boardman AICA President advises that AICA will make a submission on behalf of the members, and that AICA had sought and been granted an extension until October 15th.

    All submissions to be sent to AICA secretariat, Lorelei Broadbent: admin@aica.org.au. Only submissions relating to the HAI component will be accepted. All other feedback on the whole document should go directly to the Commission.

    Dear Committee Members

    The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) is pleased to invite you to make a submission as part of the consultation process on the five additional draft National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (the Standards).

    I have already received some feedback that the HAI standards are not robust enough for acute care services and should be more aligned with the outline of requirements from the new infection control guidelines eg.
    The AICG outline the requirements for an effective infection prevention program which incorporates:
    a facility-wide strategic plan for infection prevention and control;
    A system to manage infection prevention and control (such as a committee) with input from across the spectrum of clinical services and management, and a mechanism for considering patients feedback;
    appointment of infection control professionals and support for their continuing professional development (e.g. attendance at relevant state or national professional organisation meetings);
    Incorporating infection prevention and control into the objectives of the facilitys patient and occupational safety programs;
    administrative support, including fiscal and human resources, for maintaining infection prevention and control programs; and
    adequate staff training and protective clothing and equipment, and organise workplace conditions and structures to minimise potential hazards.

    Attached [see download link below Moderator] is the complete set of the Standards, including the five initial standards that the Commission consulted on in late 2009 and piloted in 2010. While we are seeking specific comment on the five additional draft Standards (which are highlighted with a page border), comments on the initial five Standards may also be considered.

    The results of this consultation process will be used to refine the five additional draft Standards and ensure they are meaningful for health services and practitioners implementing safety and quality systems, and accreditation agencies using the standards. These Standards will also be sent to Australian Health Ministers in 2011 for their endorsement.

    You are encouraged to forward this request through to your email and professional networks, to health services and stakeholders that may be interested in reviewing and/or commenting on the Standards.

    Making a submission

    A copy of the consultation paper that includes the five additional draft Standards is attached and [is] available to download from the Commission’s web site at http://www.safetyandquality.gov.au/internet/safety/publishing.nsf/Content/PriorityProgram-07.

    All written submissions should be received by close of business on Friday 8 October 2010 to be considered in the consultation process. If you intend to make a submission and require an extension, please let me know ASAP.

    Submissions can be sent by post, fax or email and should include:
    Name, organisation if relevant and contact details
    Responses to questions posed
    General comments
    Additional information, for example, any technical, economic or business information, or research-based evidence the Commission should be made aware of to support the views or comments.

    Please note that the deadline for response to the Autralian Healthcare Standards is on Friday 15th October (previously circulated on Infexion Connexion). As discussed in my President’s address to the members at the recent AICA conference your input is highly desired and encouraged. If you read the document (just the Infection Control component) and it makes no sense or you think something might be missing/not clear then please put your comments in writing and send to Claire_Boardman@health.qld.gov.au.

    This may be our only chance to have a say so please take the time to review these 6 essential pages. (40-47). Links to the document are available on the AICA website.
