Hi,
I have a question regarding cart covers for transferring contaminated
Reusable Medical Devices (RMD’s) from the operating theatres to CSSD. Is
there a standard requirement for the material from which they are made:
linen (laundered), vinyl (wiped) or purpose manufactured case carts – which
might then require it’s own washer?

Hi Kathryn,
Is the CSSD co-located with the Operating Suite [OS], or is the OS in a physically separate location to the CSSD?
If transferring soiled RMDs directly to the CSSD from the OS when co-located, then this can be done using the scrub trolley / back table. When transferring soiled RMDs this way it is customary to cover the RMDs with the trolley drape. As long as stacking is avoided and reusable sharps are adequately protected during transport, there is no need to place soiled RMDs in a separate container.
If the OS is in a physically separate location to the CSSD then most facilities will either use plastic tubs with lids on trolleys for transport or use a case cart system.
Im sure there are a range of variations of practice other than these but these are the most common.
