Hi all
I have a staff member who is feeling quite well but decided to be tested for COVID-19 at one of the shopping centre testing areas they have set up. She assumed she would have a result within 2 days but has been told it may be up to a week. One of my colleagues has told her she cannot return to work until she has her result – does this sound right to everyone?

Asymptomatic staff can work without restriction following being swabbed as the Victorian screening process was designed to get a snap shot of what is going on in the community and was not for anyone who displayed symptoms and was considered at particular risk for COVID19.

Hi Jenny,
Your colleague is quite right, once tested for covid you cannot return to work unless your test result is negative. One does wonder what prompted the staff member to have the unpleasant procedure done in the first place. Not something you would expect to be done on a whim.

Asymptomatic testing does not require staying away from work until the results are back only symptomatic testing has this requirement. That is my understanding of the process. The results are taking longer to be released due to the testing blitz so the timeframe is about right.

Yes the guidelines in most states are now asking people to isolate until the results are known.
To my knowledge Healthcare workers can ask for a rapid test – although this may need to come from the GP – the testing site can also provide a medical certificate.Cheers

Hi Jenny,
I wonder why this HCW was accepted for testing if they were symptom free? Maybe each jurisdiction are doing their own thing in this regard. In Tasmania, this person would not have met testing criteria if no symptoms and no other risk factors for COVID-19
If this HCW has symptoms or are a confirmed close contact of a COVID-19 case or have other risk factors for COVID-19 then they should wait until their results are available.
Interested to understand more about the decision to test this HCW.

Victoria currently have a testing blitz for healthcare workers and have encouraged all to come forward for testing regardless of symptoms.

Hi in Victoria if the person went to a government initiated COVID surveillance clinic then they can go straight back to work but if she went to a COVID clinic the they must wait until they get a negative results.

The Victorian government established a program for testing asymptomatic individuals as part of developing the road map to reduce restriction for isolation.
It was very clear that asymptomatic individuals were not required to self isolate pending results. The program has tested over 150,000 Victorians in 2 weeks.
The Victorian Government is continuing this program until 1st June with the target of testing another 150,000 residents in that time frame.
Again voluntary and no requirement to self-isolate after an asymptomatic test. I wonder why this HCW was accepted for testing if they were symptom free? Maybe each jurisdiction are doing their own thing in this regard. In Tasmania, this person would not have met testing criteria if no symptoms and no other risk factors for COVID-19
If this HCW has symptoms or are a confirmed close contact of a COVID-19 case or have other risk factors for COVID-19 then they should wait until their results are available.
Interested to understand more about the decision to test this HCW.

I have a staff member who is feeling quite well but decided to be tested for COVID-19 at one of the shopping centre testing areas they have set up. She assumed she would have a result within 2 days but has been told it may be up to a week. One of my colleagues has told her she cannot return to work until she has her result – does this sound right to everyone?

Hi Rachel – as Cathy said the Victorian government is doing a screening process to get a snapshot of what is going on in the community before they start to ease restrictions. From my research today it seems there is no need for them to isolate until they get their test results – thanks to all who have replied

Hi Jenny,
On the DHHS Website it clearly says asymptomatic people can keep going to work and doing their usual activates as required with the relevant State restrictions. There is information on the DHHS website. Let me know if you cannot find it.
We are finding results are taking longer as the Labs have so many swabs to now process.
