Hi all,
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, the patient’s communal dining room ( usually open for lunch and dinner) on our rehabilitation unit has been closed.
The rehabilitation unit staff have requested that our infection prevention and control (IPC) service consider re-opening the communal dining room, with COVID-19 infection prevention and control strategies in place.
I am wondering if IPC services in other hospitals have allowed re-opening of communal dining areas for patients, particularly within rehab units of acute care facilities. Please email me directly with any comments and thank you in advance
Warm regards,Georgia

We have communal dining in Mental health units.
We have just this week reopened.
Patients fill out a menu. They line up, socially distanced and tell staff their name, they are given a tray with their meal and then sit in the communal dining room.
The dining room and tables are big enough that they can sit together but social distance.
Just consider if the dining room is big enough to space everyone out. If not maybe consider 2 sittings?
Hopes this helps
Helen
