Hi all,
We have a fantastic RN who is required to wear a pressure stocking on her arm due to lymphedema from breast cancer.
We would love to assist her getting back to work but we have a question around hand hygiene?
I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter.
Kind regards
KristinKristin Ryan-Agnew

Hi Kristin,
Surely the workplace protocol for staff who do not have bare below elbows for religious reasons would be the same as for that staff member.
The NHHI Manual describes the bare below the elbows as cultural with limited evidence.I did ring the Human Rights Commission about this some time ago.
It is important to be mindful of discrimination on the basis of physical or religious grounds. But someone may have fantastic research in this area to share.

26/02/2020 at 9:37 am #76365Hi All,
An important consideration is also the employers obligations from a workplace health and safety perspective i.e. to ensure the safety of the employee. (Of course it isnt just an obligation – I am sure we all want to keep everyone safe). There is a significant risk to any health care worker if they are not able to effectively perform hand hygiene whilst working in the clinical setting. To allow someone to work knowing that they cannot correctly and effectively perform hand hygiene would be knowingly putting someone at risk.
Just an additional perspective.

Hi All
This is all very interesting and most worthy of discussion without prejudice. I have never had any issue or complaints when asking caregivers to adhere to BBE. I sought advice from a religious leader who advised that is a personal decision to adopt the dress code and not a religious requirement, others may have been advised differently. It is a very uncomfortable decision to have but one that was well received at the time. I think that safety of patients must always come first, the same as the reasoning behind the person wearing a pressure bandage in previous conversation.Lucille Ridley

An interesting discussion. Some literature worth having a look at:Rigid infection prevention and control rules and religious discrimination: An uncomfortable juxtaposition?
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1757177419884690This looks particularly at the religious side of bare below the elbows but a WH&S argument similarly could go either way.
