    Hi Folks
I have just been asked by one of our cleaners about the possibility of getting a ‘bomb’ to clean our infectious rooms. What she described was something akin to a flea bomb that you set off and then close the door. Does anyone know if this is a thing and how much they cost?

    Hi Jude,

As a supplier of cleaning and disinfection products, I do not know of any
such product however, there are a few that purport to work this way, but I
would question how well it would do the job.

There is nothing that really substitutes the cleaning process and that is
the only way that you can ensure that all surfaces have been cleaned and/or
    disinfected.

We do work with organisations that use a bio-misting machine to go over the
area they have cleaned and disinfected to ensure that nothing has been
    missed.

Another factor to consider is that if a surface is not cleaned properly,
many disinfectants are not effective on dirty surfaces.

I understand the desire to have a product that does it all especially in an
infected room, but nothing will work better than a good cleaning and
disinfecting protocol which requires mechanical action.

If a product did exist, I would certainly question its effectiveness.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Kind Regards

    hi Jude,

We used to use these at Castlemaine during outbreaks. You could probably
give Sue Wyatt a call there. I do recall something down the track about
them not being great for some reason so I’d check first. They did cut down
cleaning time significantly although you still need to do surfaces. It was
more for the soft furnishings etc.

    Cheers, Amanda

    Hi Jude

    I hope you’re doing well.

The cleaner is likely referring to disinfectant fogging bombs such as
    this one
    https://www.starhygiene.com.au/king-mist-disinfectant-fogger-250ml/?gclidCj0KCQjwv5uKBhD6ARIsAGv9a-zpjTOtkZlvbGYIkqUXJyGEFof494LVW2k1rhtVMuaAWPIH8kE0uW4aAmpCEALw_wcB

These are not appropriate, especially in a healthcare setting. In the
context of COVID, the Vic DH does not recommend the use of disinfectant
fogging in any form. You can find IPC guidelines here
    that
    mention fogging.

And keep in mind that all cleaning/disinfectant products must be
    TGA-approved.

    I hope this helps.

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care have released a guideline – Environmental Cleaning: Emerging Technologies and have made recommendations for exploring emerging cleaning technologies as an adjunct to traditional environmental cleaning programs, considering the objective of their use and current evidence for the effectiveness. It is also recommend to consider the effectiveness existing infection prevention and control strategies and assess the risk of infection within the organisation and any gaps in the organisation’s existing environmental cleaning programs.
Table 1 summarises common emerging cleaning technologies, including the benefits and limitations of their use including work health and safety considerations
Additional information on the use of emerging cleaning technologies is provided in the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare

    Hi Jude

    I hope you’re doing well.

The cleaner is likely referring to disinfectant fogging bombs such as this one https://www.starhygiene.com.au/king-mist-disinfectant-fogger-250ml/?gclidCj0KCQjwv5uKBhD6ARIsAGv9a-zpjTOtkZlvbGYIkqUXJyGEFof494LVW2k1rhtVMuaAWPIH8kE0uW4aAmpCEALw_wcB

These are not appropriate, especially in a healthcare setting. In the context of COVID, the Vic DH does not recommend the use of disinfectant fogging in any form. You can find IPC guidelines here that mention fogging.

And keep in mind that all cleaning/disinfectant products must be TGA-approved.

    I hope this helps.

However, the studies including an RCT published in the Lancet emphasis that

    Hi Jude

Additional information on the use of emerging cleaning technologies is provided in the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare

    https://www.safetyandquality.gov.au/publications-and-resources/resource-library/environmental-cleaning-emerging-environmental-cleaning-technologies

In relation to the chemical your cleaner has suggested I have heard of the Sterri Matt Gienie – I am not recommending or endorsing this product and recommend you undertake your own organisational risk assessment

    Hi Everyone,

I believe there is a lot of confusion on “fogging’ or Bio-misting.

Many of the guidelines are generally for work health and safety as
unfortunately many operators have used inferior products or products that
were harmful when used in this way, especially in 2020/21.

Bio-misting has been used for many years in several settings including food
manufacturing and farming and have been found effective in other facilities.
The guidelines also state that if this method has been previously used, it
can be continued to be. This would cover facilities that have been properly
trained in the use of this method and do not need to change their protocols.

There are several products that can be safely used in these machines and are
effective against norovirus and other pathogens without containing bleach.

Bleach should never be used in this method. It can be harmful and damaging,
    particularly to soft furnishings.

We have heard some harrowing stories of people mis-using products and
causing harm to themselves or surfaces.

Using correct products with proper training can be a very cost-effective
method to keep areas safe but again, I would stress that this would be only
as part of a comprehensive cleaning and disinfecting protocol and never as a
    standalone solution.

I would also like to add that it is crucial to check on the instructions
that come with the product as, for instance, the product mentioned earlier
requires a room to be kept closed for 2 hours after application.

I would suspect that this would not be practical in most settings.

I hope this is information is helpful.

    Hello,

It is called Fogging in Queensland.

We have followed up with several gastro outbreaks in childcare centres (CCC)
and residential aged care facilities (RACF). They often call Public health
to discuss the value of Fogging as it generally costs about $200 per Room.

Our advice is it works best when there is a known pathogen – if it is
Norovirus then the fogging must include bleach. When ask the fogging
companies – the answer is usually no?

We also advised that if Fogging is going to be used then all items must be
surfaced cleaned with detergent to remove any fomites. We recommend that
they clean all areas that are frequently touched including under tables,
chairs etc. Curtains and soft furnishings will need to be removed as they
    become wet.

When we discuss this with the facilities they often think- whilst they are
putting in the effort to clean they might as well bleach and save some
    money.

I am not sure of any peer review studies available on Fogging. I would like
to know if anyone has sighted any.

    Cheers
