Hi
I am seeking clarification of the definition of ‘medical sharp’ in relation to IV giving sets discarded in the waste (clinical or general) in South Australia. The Environment Protection (Waste to Resources)Policy 2010 for South Australia state:
18-Disposal of medical sharps
(2) In this clause-
medical sharp includes needles, hypodermic needles, syringes with needles or other
surgical instruments that have been used in a domestic situation for medical purposes.
Do IV giving sets come under this category even when left intact, hence to be disposed of in the sharps waste (medical waste)?
I would expect that IV blood transfusion giving sets come under medical (clinical) waste as they would have expressible blood still in them?
Can anyone help clarify this for me please?
