I agree Michelle,
Although I do not work in a health care setting I still work in infection control. As a skin penetration premises inspector I am occasionally amazed at the ceiling finishes that architects and other premises designers propose putting into clinical and semi clinical areas, not to mention instrument reprocessing areas as they” look more attractive and will provide a ”calmer ”environment”.
A ceiling needs to smooth, intact, gap free (and that includes shadow cornices) and prevent ingress of environmental contaminants (such as dust and fibres from ceiling tiles) and also from insects and vermin. This is also a requirement for food preparation areas in commercial premises…
To make the designers understand the requirements of a health care setting his needs to be taught at the very basic level for the undergraduate architects and designers?
It doesn’t solve the current issue, but it might assist for future planning.
Kind regards
