We have purchased a Bladder Volume Tester Unit and the manufacturer’s user guide states the probe requires high level disinfection after each use
The manufacturers recommendation is to use Phthalaldehyde solution (0.55%).

There are two scenarios for the use of the bladder scanner:
    1. Examination is performed on intact skin .
Risk assessment : non – invasive procedure
    Spaulding classification :non- critical
Question : Would the probe be cleaned using a low level disinfection e.g detergent /disinfectant wipe rather than high level disinfection?

    2. Examination is performed on non-intact skin &/ or the patient has an infection e.g Shingles
Question : If a probe cover is used would the probe also be cleaned using a low level disinfection ?

    Hi Catherine,

The ACIPC and ASUM position statement on Guidelines for reprocessing ultrasound transducers: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ajum.12042 has a really great flow chart in the appendix that says the bladder scanner can be cleaned and disinfected with low-level disinfection if used on intact skin, and low-level disinfection if used on infected skin with a probe cover.

It might also be worth reaching out to the rep for some more information on types of disinfection that can be used that are practical in your clinical setting.

    Karen
