Hi All, just hoping for a little advice on the plans for our new CSSD. Of course we do not have enough space for a clear dirty to clean flow round trip so we are trying to prioritise so we as compliant with AS4187. One member of our team does not like the plan of the trolley washer in the decon zone going in and out in the same zone before going back down the corridor to the packing zone (not ideal!) as the wheels will be contaminated. The other option is to have a flow through cart washer that flows through from decon to the packing zone but this poses the risk of excess water as the carts are wheeled past the packing benches. We have tried all possible different spaces for the cart washer but we are really limited with the design! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Michelle,
It is not completely unheard of for a cart washer to unload in a packing area. Most cart washers these days have a tilting mechanism to assist in water draining during the drying stage.
If residual wetness is a concern for the brand of cart washer under consideration, then I suggest you speak to the suppliers to identify if there are strategies that could be used to ensure that the residual wetness is minimised.
You could also consider selecting case carts that have a free draining design.
Kind Regards

SAHi Michelle,
Apologies if it sounds obvious, but prior to procurement, do check any proposed carts/trolleys for design elements which may be prone to water retention. It’s also good to consider the thermal load incurred by the design and material. This applies especially to bespoke designs and modifications, which should be accompanied by a full engineering risk assessment before being altered further.
I have had some experiences with a bespoke case cart design an subsequent modifications which retained rinse water in an internal structure and therefore risked re-contaminating sterile packs during transport. This caused rework and expensive interim controls until it was resolved. Also the very heavy, closed design means that washer cycle time and energy are increased in order to reach the required surface temperatures.

Andrew Ellis

Hi
I received this response from our CSSD Managers…..hope it helps!
CART WASHER for Trolleys
We have a pass through cart washer and on unloading of the trolleys they do have some excess water on completion even though our cycle times have been increased. The trolleys after they are removed from the washer ramp they sit to the side until we wipe the excess water off with low lint cloths before taking them past out packing tables and out the door down to the corridor to trolley room.
When passing the tables they are to one side and we have some space that assists with this. As long as staff wipe excess water off and they come out dry there is no issue.
Dirty room
Our trolleys go through the cart washer and loaded in the dirty room however sometimes if the unit is out for servicing then we hand wipe them in dirty room and take them out of the room and down the corridor to the trolley room. Also once you have a cart washer you realise that the trolleys bank up or theatres require one therefore you need to wipe them over, many SSD unit do not have more than one cart washer. This is a contingency plan for when the unit is not available or is in use, we are still compliant to the standard as we have clean / dirty work flows however than you need to look at operationally how you manage this.
