    Hi Hand Hygiene Enthusiasts,

There has recently been released a DRAFT Australian Standard titled:
AS 1071 – Placement and presentation of hand hygiene materials in health care settings

The context for this standard in presented in the draft document’s foreword:
“In 2009, Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation funded a research study that demonstrated that compliance with hand hygiene is directly proportional to the accessibility and availability of products to decontaminate hands. The study also showed that there was no consistency in the positioning of hand hygiene solutions relative to the sink in any health care setting. As a result, staff reported the widespread and frequent use of moisturizer instead of hand wash to decontaminate their hands, and have self-reported the need to standardize the placement of solutions.”

The draft Standard is now open for Public Comment. Comments can be submitted to Standards Australia up until the 05-02-2015.

Note if there are more than 10 comments, the comment template should be used which can be downloaded from the same page. The attached guide explains in detail.

HHA were invited to participate in the development and review of this document, and we would also strongly encourage your comments; in particular there are two points of the draft specifically requesting public comment. It would be very valuable to have feedback from a healthcare organisation perspective on how this standard would be able to be implemented, and comments regarding this would help the committee to shape the standard into a document that will assist in improving HH around the country.

After the 5th February 2015 the committee will meet again to address each and every comment made prior to the release of the standard.

    Regards

    Kate Ryan
