An article recently published in open access journal PLoS One concludes
that surgical site infections with MRSA can add up to US$60000 extra
costs on a patient episode.‘Conclusion
The attributable impact of S. aureus and methicillin-resistance on
outcomes of surgical patients issubstantial. Preventing a single case of SSI due to MRSA can save
hospitals as much as $60,000.’http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.00083
05More evidence to help with business cases for infection control
resources! It is interesting to note that they mostly only examined cardiac and
orthopaedic procedures, which may have actually underestimated the full
impact of MRSA in surgical site infections, and that these specific
groups may possibly incur higher excess costs.http://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/hotnews/mrsa-and-surgical-patient-o
