POSITION BACKGROUND
Healthcare Infection (ISSN 1329-9360) is the official journal of the Australian Infection Control Association Inc (AICA) now known as ACIPC, a multi-disciplinary association of health care professionals involved in the prevention and control of infection. Published quarterly, the Journal provides a peer-reviewed medium for communication of scholarly work among the professional disciplines involved in this specialist field. Its purpose is to expand infection control knowledge so as to prevent healthcare associated infections.Healthcare Infection is the premier Australasian infection control journal, of particular relevance to Asia Pacific and South American regions. It boasts an International Editorial Committee comprising of the Editor-in-Chief, Assistant Editor (Journal Watch), 3 Commissioning Editors, and more than 20 Australian and International board members.
A current vacancy exists for the position of Interim Editor-in-Chief as the current Editor-in-Chief has been appointed as ACIPC President-ElectThe candidate will have the support of the professional publisher (CSIRO Publishing) dedicated to learned societies and the use of an editorial assistant for much of the mechanical processes.
Terms of appointment (refer to Foundation Operational Guidelines Oct 2011)
The appointment of the Interim Editor-in-Chief will occur in accordance with the provisions set out in this document, the Colleges Constitution and Foundation Operational Guidelines, and other directives so determined by the Executive Council.
The Editor-in-Chief will be appointed by, and is responsible to, the ACIPC Executive Council for the operation of the Healthcare Infection in collaboration with the commercial publisher CSIRO.
The Editor-in-Chief and the Executive Council will establish an agreement that sets out mutually agreed conditions of appointment and the roles of the Editor-in-Chief and the Executive Council within 30 days of the appointment of the Editor-in-Chief.
The Editor-in-Chief will be required to undertake their duties in accordance with key performance indicators set out in the agreement, and be reported to the ACIPC Executive Council annually
The Editor-in-Chief may establish sub-editorial or other positions and committees of the journal such as an international editorial advisory committee to carry out key functions under their strict and sole direction.
The Editor-in-Chief will coordinate and Chair at least 1 meeting of the Editorial Board per year, one of which will include a meeting during the proceedings of the ACIPC Annual Conference
The Editor-in-Chief is not a member of the Executive Council and will maintain editorial independence and freedom as described by the World Association of Medical Editors and International Committee on Medical Journal Editors.
The Editor-in-Chief will receive an annual honorarium to be determined by the Executive Council which will be a component of the terms and conditions of appointment.
The performance of the Editor in Chief will be evaluated annually against established key performance indicators which would include management of manuscripts in a timely manner, increasing the number of submitted papers, ensuring the journal has a balanced and active international editorial board, achievement of Medline indexation. This will occur at the February meeting of the ACIPC EC each year.
The appointment of the interim editor is for a period of 2 years.KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential criteria:
Relevant experience and expertise so determined by the Executive Council; as follows
An established publication track record of national and international standing
Contemporary expertise in infection control and prevention and an advanced understanding of the contemporary trends and challenges within the discipline;
Be a Credentialled Infection Control Professional (CICP) or demonstrated commitment to working towards same
Financial membership of the College for a minimum of 2 years;
High level written and oral communication skills;
Demonstrated understanding of the contemporary standards and trends in publishing and publication scholarship
Post graduate qualifications in infection control, public health, epidemiology, or infectious diseases (e.g. Masters Degree, PhD) or equivalent
Previous experience as an editor in editorial duties and/or peer review
Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically and to work autonomouslyREQUIREMENTS of the POSITION
Continue with the current strategic plan for growing and developing Healthcare Infection
Demonstrated understanding of and an ability to work and liaise with board members and international counterparts
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work effectively under stress with minimum guidance and support
Ability to analyse and digest technical and political issues which may effect publication and readership of the journal
Willingness to work cohesively with appointed publishing company (CSIRO) and with potential authors
Ability to present relevant information in a concise, effective and focused manner, both orally and written
Working knowledge of computer applications and telecommunication technologies
REPORTING
The Editor in Chief must report quarterly to the Executive Council on a range of areas including, but not limited to, the following:
Decisions which may have a financial impact for the College
Number of submissions/rejection rates
Progress with Medline indexation
Reports from editorial Board meetings (twice a year)
Inform the College about planned special editions of the journalHOW TO APPLY
