Announcement of the Australasian Tuberculosis Forum
In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in Tuberculosis
related activities around Australia and New Zealand. It is exciting to
see so many people involved in TB research, clinical practice, policy
development and other areas of engagement. This expansion has also made
it more challenging to communicate with the broad range of people
passionate about TB in our region. The Australasian Tuberculosis Forum
is an opportunity to facilitate greater connection between and
recognition for the broad range of policy makers, clinicians, patients,
scientists and public health workers working for tuberculosis control
and elimination in our region. We intend to promote collaborations of a
variety of kinds, including regular interdisciplinary meetings and
research relating to tuberculosis. As time goes on, we hope also to
foster development and public awareness around tuberculosis,
particularly in relation to the important role Australian and New
Zealand can play in regional TB control.Activities
The ATF will start with a regular email newsletter, with notices
regarding meetings, TB-related activities and opportunities for
collaboration on TB projects. We will also plan to coordinate and
promote regular forums for dissemination of tuberculosis research and
training. This will include an annual conference intended to gather the
broad range of people involved in tuberculosis-related activities from
around Australia, New Zealand and our region; in 2014 this will be held
with the TB-CRE Symposium, May 1-2, in Sydney. We also hope that this group can be involved in promoting and expanding
Australasian efforts towards regional TB control efforts. The ATF will
intend to prepare TB related educational and advocacy materials for a
range of stakeholders, including media, politicians and policy makers –
activities that we hope all interested members can be part of, so watch
this space!Membership and governance
Joining the ATF is free – just email us at the address below. We expect
that members of the ATF will be drawn from a variety of other
professional bodies, and we will work alongside other organisations to
promote effective tuberculosis education and policy. This is a group for
anyone interested in TB, and will not be in competition with other
overlapping organisation. No qualifications are required to join apart
from enthusiasm for tuberculosis! We’ll form an initial steering
committee to start the process, and within 12 months we will hold an
annual general meeting to review the activities of the group and
consider its future directions, including decisions about formalising
its structure and governance as appropriate. How do I get involved or find out more?
Sign up to receive email updates, and please forward this email to
anyone interested in TB in our region. We’d also love to hear about TB
related meetings, scholarships, activities or collaborative
possibilities that we can advertise to other members. We have a newly
established webpage hosted by the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence
in Tuberculosis Control at http://www.tbcre.org.au .
