Hi Joe
I have rarely seen HCWs who use alcohol hand rub / gel on their gloved hands, similar to HCWs who wash gloved hands with soap and water. Obviously both are practices to be strongly discouraged, as per the Australian Guidelines for Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare B1.2.5.

I have seen staff doing this in my previous role as an ICP. When you
attempt to reason with them regarding this they can not see that the
alcohol hand rub is designed to clean their hands not gloves.I have also had to have discussions with staff re using the alcohol hand
rub to clean equipment.Janet

04/10/2012 at 4:16 pm #69386I have many years back in another healthcare facility as I’d worked on
an ID ward for a good couple of years and PPE usage was rife with the
many patients on isolation, Joe.
Boils down to knowledge deficit as these gloves will breakdown with
prolonged usage… have seen caregivers walking around with gloves
showing tiny tears as a result of shear forces or worse still, rips at
the finger tips due to long nails, all this after patient contact.
So if anyone’s gelling or washing these gloves out of convenience to
“comply” with the 5 Moments, they’re truly not helping anyone (this
practice effectively ceased through inservice education at the other
healthcare facility).
Wasn’t there an old study done to prove that the gloves aren’t 100%
hole-proof and “juice” extracts taken after contact with VRE patients
did isolate VRE (or some other pathogen) on culture plates?

Hi Joe,
I have seen this practice and have actively discouraged it continuing, it
is often related to users wearing gloves inappropriately so looking at
glove use may also assist with resolving the problem, It is specifically
discouraged in the national infection control guidelines and also by Hand

Hi Joe,
I have seen this practice and have actively
discouraged it continuing, it is often related to users wearing gloves
inappropriately so looking at glove use may also assist with resolving
the problem, It is specifically discouraged in the national infection control
guidelines and also by Hand Hygiene Australia

Sue

j{M6P} 6<04/10/2012 at 9:26 pm #69394Hi all,
Couple of facts / reasons why this glove thing needs stamping out.
Hand sanitizers are not capable of sterilizing gloves:
1. Sanitizers are not sterilizers as they do not kill spores nor are they made in a sterile environment. They are made in a clean room GMP licensed facility
2. Sanitizers do not kill spore former shells like C.Diff http://www.shea-online.org/Portals/0/CDI%20hand%20hygiene%20Update.pdf and some viruses like norovirus http://www.cdc.gov/hai/pdfs/norovirus/229110-ANoroCaseFactSheet508.pdf
When these types of outbreaks occur, as per CDC & WHO guidance , physical hand washing with soap and water takes priority over hand sanitizers.
see you at the conference I hope

05/10/2012 at 6:51 am #69395Another poor practice I have seen creeping in to a number of facilities other than the ABHR and glovesis the wearing of two pairs of gloves and peeling off the outside layer of gloves after performing a procedure and before going to the next personand also when caring in an isolation room!!!again totally inappropriate.
I understand that this practice is being taught by some TAFE colleges and training organisations when training Cert ll and lll care givers. It amazes me that someone would actually teach this?
Kind Regards
Judy Forrest
