    Dear Colleagues,

We have a small number of staff who are experiencing skin problems thought
to be from the use of alcohol based hand rub.

If anyone has experience in this area and could recommend ABHRs that are
good for sensitive skin or people who may be experiencing dermatitis could
you please contact me via email lori.mcleod@healthcareimagingl.com.au

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Hi Lori,
The National Hand Hygiene Initiative manual has advice on this, with good references.
In my experience It is rarely the ABHR that is causing the problem. Often it is lack of moisturizering hands during shift- at least 3 times- prolonged use of gloves or washing hands with soap and water over ABHR.
Hands tend to sweat under non sterile gloves if worn for extended periods . We have very hard water in our hospital and have so far managed to address complaints of dermatitis by modifying the factors above and not changing ABHR
Occasionally we see a true allergy but that is very rare.
