On 5 May 2009, Austin Health celebrated World Hand Hygiene Day. The aim
of this World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative was to highlight the
critical importance of good hand hygiene in patient care with a global
call to action to help reduce health care-associated infections. At
Austin Health it was decided to draw on this theme and further promote
the use of alcohol hand rub to visitors to our facility.

While hand hygiene for visitors has been encouraged in our hospital at
ward level since the introduction of the hand hygiene program in 2001,
it was felt that we could get a bigger and better message to those
visiting our facility if we “marketed” the message and our hand hygiene
product at the main entrance to the hospital. This initiative was also
in line with the Brumby Government’s war on “Superbugs” declared on the
3rd of October 2007 as part of the Start Clean-Victorian Infection
Control Strategy.

After consultation with key stakeholders, a decision was made to create
a hand hygiene booth. The “Hand Rub Hub” is positioned in the foyer of
the main entrance to Austin Hospital – in front of the entry to the
lifts and main hospital corridor. The hub has been a great success with
an average of four bottles of hand hygiene product used daily. Feedback
from visitors continues to be positive and indicates that they feel that
they are making a constructive contribution to infection prevention. It
seems that visitors welcome the opportunity to support hand hygiene
initiatives when given the tools to do so.

I would like to know if any members have placed their alcohol based hand
rubs in public areas such as near lifts, entrances etc in their
hospitals.
If so where have you put it and what form has this taken (bracket on
wall, hand hygiene station etc) and have you had any issues with this.
