Morning everyone

I would advise caution with regards to the definition of what is mandatory. Whilst is may not be mandatory in some jurisdictions for staff to physically receive the vaccine, the Commonwealth makes it mandatory to offer a free vaccine and to promote and encourage staff to receive the vaccine.

The Aged Care Quality Standards, Standard 3 Personal care and clinical care, Requirement 3g As part of effective influenza infection control, organisations providing residential aged care need to offer its workforce influenza vaccinations and keep records of these vaccinations. They also need to promote the benefits of the vaccinations, including any vaccinations which may become available for coronavirus (COVID-19). https://www.agedcarequality.gov.au/providers/standards/standard-3

Further to that, the Responsibilities of residential aged care providers https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/residential-aged-care/responsibilities-of-residential-aged-care-providers states To help prevent and stop the spread of flu in aged care, you must have processes in place. This is a requirement to comply with the Aged Care Quality Standards.

And further clarifies: Your service must take precautions to prevent and control the flu and minimise infection-related risks. That includes:

* identifying and complying with all relevant Commonwealth and state or territory legislation and regulatory requirements

* having an effective infection prevention and control program that is in line with national guidelines

* offering free flu vaccinations every year to your staff and volunteers, and keeping records of their vaccinations.

You must also demonstrate:

* how you have promoted and informed your staff and volunteers about the benefits of vaccination

* the steps you have taken to encourage staff and volunteers to get vaccinated.

It might seem like a finicky semantic argument, but I think it is important to highlight that it is not a simple dichotomous mandatory/not mandatory.

Cheers

Hi all

I think this might currently be state specific? Cannot see a Commonwealth mandate at this stage. Can anyone confirm if Victoria is following this requirement?

Thanks
