Kylie,

The Dental Hospital follows AS/NZS 4187 and we are encouraging all our agencies to follow the new edition of AS/NZS4187 when published not AS/NZS4815:2006.
We are in the process of upgrading (over time) bench top sterilisers to single larger capacity freestanding units and washer disinfectors to majority of the clinics.

Hi Kylie,

As I understand it, it will be up to the individual office based practice to make a decision as to whether it continues to comply with AS/NZS4815:2006 [until it is updated or superseded at some point in the future] or if you wish to implement the requirements of the new edition of AS/NZS4187 once it is published.

Good Afternoon All,

I would like to get your thoughts on what would be the best standard to apply to office-based eg, dental, outpatient department sterilising once the revised AS/NZS 4187 is published.

I am of the understanding that the revised AS/NZS 4187 will only supersede AS/NZS 4187:2003 and that AS4815:2006 will still be in effect (and there is no intent to update this in the near future) as the standard for office-based facilities not involved in complex patient procedures and sterilising processes such as low temp sterilisation.

But when you look at the draft scope of the new AS/NZS 4187 standard is includes all reusable medical devices in human healthcare and acknowledges that there are similarities and differences between different types of HSOs, for example hospitals, dental practice etc.

So which one would be applicable to the office-based environment?

Should we update our policies and audit tools to reflect both??

Regards,

Kylie Long
