Free RSV vaccine from 3 February

The Australian Government has announced a free respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine rollout for pregnant women from 3 February 2025.

The free maternal RSV vaccine will be available to women who are 28 to 36 weeks pregnant and will provide protection to their newborn baby.

RSV is a common respiratory virus which can cause serious illness in infants. Around 12,000 babies are admitted to hospital with severe RSV each year in Australia. Maternal immunisation reduces the risk of severe RSV disease in babies under 6 months by about 70 per cent.

The RSV vaccine will join the other free and recommended maternal vaccines, influenza and whooping cough, under the National Immunisation Program, and can safely be received at the same time.
