Companion Animals in Aged Care

Residential and visiting animals are well-recognized for improving the quality of life for older adults in care. A person- and animal-centered approach is adopted to support the continued companionship between an older person and their pet when transitioning into residential care.

The Aged Care Draft Bill 2024 outlines the rights of older individuals to stay connected with their pets, should they choose to. The Aged Care Quality Standards emphasize the importance of Person-Centered Care, which includes considering the preferences and mental well-being of older persons.

This bundle of resources aims to provide guidance to help support older people, their pets, and care providers in facilitating the co-residence of older individuals and their pets.
